His :»- thorough acquaintance with the? wants of the Province^ and his education and business • -habits^ 1 make -. it I ivery: : ~ desirable that he should find a seat in tta Council Chamber. Nothing further "h'as^ transpired with regard to the country districts, although ; several names haive_ been mentioned," probably without their owners' consent., Mr. Holmes has "not ~ signified his inteiitioa of oifering himself for election as a member of - Council. A report of Mr. Button's address to the electors of Invercargill , will be found: in another part of to-day's issue. We cannot say that we consider the exposition of his : ■ views altogether satisfactory. He declined ~ to say how he would vote when th^ question of the Superintendency came before ,- ; the Council. He preferred waiting: for. further information, but definitely stated te would -vote for no one wto tad been a.. member of the old Council. On other . points he appears generally sound. He considers £2 per acre too muchfor the land, and believes it will retard settlement. He is in favor of endeavoring to introduce a better, or richer, class" of immigrants. He. would repeal the Education Ordinance altogether, but we cannot agree with him when he thinksthe Government should not interfere at all in the matter. He doubted whether the Town Board'had not better be abolished, but was, in our opinion, inclined to invest the Superintendent with power in municipal matters which he was far better without for many reasons. Into the great question of finance Mr. Button did not enter at all, nor did those present question him as ta his views on that important subject. The - answer of Mi*. James Francis Collins to a requisition from certain electors of the Waienewa District is most satisfactory, and we trust his candidature will prove successful. ~We call attention to the fact that the friends and supporters of Messr3. J. E. Davies and T. M. MaccLonald are requested to meet at the Southern. Cross Hotel this evening, at half-past seven o'clock.
