The sittings at the Resident Magistrate's Court on the Ist lnst. were protracted to a very late hour the greater part of the time being consumed by a> case at the instance of Messrs. Spence and Hamil" ton (trustees in the estate of Mr. Stephen Spurling) to recover nominally from Mathew Price, Esq., late resident Magistrate, a sum of money paid into Court by Messrs. Butfcnec and Hallenstein, as proceeds of. goods sold under a distress warrant alleged to be issued after the execution of a deed of assignment. A report of the proceedings will be found elsewhere, from which, it will be observed, that the Resident Magistrate reserved his decision on the legal points involved till this morning. The case, gave the learned counsel retained on either side ample scope for forensic span-ing, which, as the Court did not adjourn till six. o'clock, .it will be inferred was fully taken advantage of. Yesterday (Istinst.) we inspected a large clock at the. shop, of Mr. J3road,. .watcnxaakery -Tay-street, which has been in the possession of a merchant in this town for some" time. It is a large eiglit--day clock with two transparent dials, and wa&, in .fact, raadfr for a Town Hall, Church, or other public building. The ' dials " are each three feet in diameter, and the- circumference of the outer metal casing measures c- about feet. The /dock, is fitted wiifo.'e^traT move-ments.-.to .light itself; up. or, ' put itself put according to the length or shortness of the days. It isjmade ;so;that?it will' project six ;feet tTver-the pathway. The length of the pendulum is seven feet, the weight at the foot being twenty-three lbs. ■ : The weights: for the works, are eighty lb'sfm; weight. The original cost in Edinburgh, we are : informed, was £200, and the-makers were Messrs. Syms and Sons. The present owner proposes to dis[pbserof it 'to the town ofltivercargillbyisubscription, and to place it in the hands of three gentlemen who shoidd appomt 'a'Jsite foifats'erection. Seeing that,. , so, much inconvenience is . felt in this • town from the 'want' 1 Of' correct time, we trust this, /opportunity will not be lost by the Inhabitants tha^'the siim>equired*'f6r^e',px^:wpe *of 'this' elock'may speedily be found.'
