ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

o ■WB DO ITOT IDENTIFY OtTBSELVES TW ANY TVAY "WITH THB OPINIONS EXPRESSED BY OUB COEBBSPOMDBNTS. -— »— TO THE BDITOB OP TUB SOUTHLAND TIMJS3. Sib, — Having been absent from Invercargill for a considerable period, you may guess my surprise to find on my return a few days since, how fearfully changed the place and people are, and being naturally curious to see how our new Resident Magistrate acquits himself, I strolled into his Court yesterday morning, and how horrified I was to see our worthy bailiff in the dock accused of a breach of the peace. But my astonishment does not cease here — lo ! this morning when carelessly looking over the Daily News, was I not struck with the marked respect shown to the disorderly bailiff; the faithful reporter to that paper omits his name, and mark the substitute, or rather subterfuge : — " One peace disturber was ordered to enter into his own recognizance of £20 to keep the peace for three months." Alas, said I, Peter Devalley, you are a favored man ; the times must have altered, and no doubt have made inroads upon the fourth estate. — I *m, air, Your* truly. NO FEAR.
