The Northern mails, per the s.s. Phoabe, havo been anticipated by the news we published in. last Saturday's issue. From the Wakatip Mail we observe that our late townsman, Dr. J. Rutherford Ryley, has commenced practice in Queenstown. We are glad to learn. that all the immigrants per the Sevilla, with the exception of those hailing from Girvan, are already absorbed by our population in town and in the country districts. The number now on hand, therefore, will amount to about one hundred. The eighth of the course of evening lectures r will be delivered this evening in the hall of the Mechanics' Institute, by C. E. Button, Esq., solicitor. Subject V "Voltaic Electricity." We understand this lecture, will bo illustrated by experiments of a very interesting charabter, and we can confidently predict a rare treat to all who avail themselves of the opportunity of being present. . ;' ; ,v 'X .'.• K.- \] --o ;" '-.. >' i ]'£" . .... We understand that several of the passengers per the Sevilla, were admitted into the Hospital ' yesterday. / They were suffering from scurvy. At a recent sitting of the Legislative Assembly of Tasmania, the sum of £800 was voted for the importation of another batch of Salmon Ova. ; Two serious accidents have occurred to .miners I during the past week. The Wakatip Mail' reports , that at Moke Creek a man named Jerry. D'Arcy , was suddenly covered over hy the falling in of a bank while his party; was sluicing. It was a most miraculous escape, as the sufferer was completely buried under the mass of earth and stones that fell L upon him, and he is one of the many who nar-A rowly escaped being killed from similar causes. He is now progressing favorably at the hospital. , The other was of a moro severe nature, and oc- [ cured at the Nokomai. The miner injured is l named James Johns. A bank of earth and rock • here again fell;; and broke the .unfortunate man's ! leg in several places. He endured intense suffering in being carried upon a rude stretcher to Kingston. [ there being put on board the Victoria steamer in a ; slung, rude bush contrivance, and transported to Frankton ; from this place he was removed to the . hospital. This case is a very acute one. Who will not come forward and assist the hospital under '. these circunstances, and give their sympathy to 1 those brave men who, as true philanthrophists — I though unknowingly — : have done more for the > Province than themselves. l A certificate, signed by nearly sixty of the hotelkeepers, storekeepers, and bankers, &c, at ' Queenstown, is published in the local paper to 1 the effect that "We, the undersigned, hereby • certify that we have known, Mr. Joseph Silberi berg during his residence at Queenstown, while i carrying on business as a restaurant keeper, in a very creditable manner. Mr. Silberberg had the leading aud most respectable business in that line" 1 here, and for a time kept the Club Hotel ; ani we can further testify that we never knew him to be insolvent, and that he did not run away from here leaving his debts behind him unpaid ; but believe Mr. Silberberg had, on the contrary, a considerable amount of money when he left/ [ The Arrow correspondent of the Wakatip Mail has the following on the visit of Mr. Waymouth to that place, as Secretary to the Otago Exhibi- • tion Committee: — "The anticipated Exhibition meeting which was advertised to bo held here has not come off. On the evening appointed for that purpose, ___r. 'Wa.ymoirfclr, tibe peripatetic _cere- ; tary to the institution, did not put in an appearance, and the parties who attended, in expectation , of hearing his views on the subject, after waiting until their patience was quite exhausted, at last dispersed under the impression that a meeting s would take place on tho following evening ; but in this they were again disappointed. ; Mri Waymouth did arrive here during the day ; but having refreshed himself and steed; ho again travelled, wending his way to the Dunstan, leaving no public explanation of his reason for" treating us so cavalierly. Naturally enough, people inquire why he did this, and opinions 'are freely expressed that if this accredited agent of "the Exhibi- , tion commissioners really has any earnest desire to ensure the adequate representation of the gold districts, he should certainly descend from the stilts of fancied dignity of office, and set about his allotted task in a more practical manner. Beyond observing the ordinary courtesies" of social life, the Arrow people certainly are not ; in the habit of receiving every illustrious stranger who comes amongst them with nriy very obsequious attention, and if Mr. Waymo_th expected to be greeted with a public oration, he decidedly came to the wrong locality ; but had he chosen to meet the public as a ' practical man of business, and explained what was required or expected of them, he would have gained the co-operation of many who would havejoined him heart and hand in insuring the ohject of his visit. That he did not do so is to be deplored, because it is only by prompt and energetic action any general interest in the Exhibition arrangements is likely to be excited in this immediate district. We understand that it is intended to organize a subscription list in aid of the widows" and familie. of those men who left Invercargill for 1 Bluff Harbor some weeks since in a lighter, which has not since been heard of, and which it is now too probable went down with all on board. We trust this charitable and praiseworthy endeavour may meet with a large measure of success at the hands of our citizens. - Elsewhere will be found a report of a meeting of electors held last night, at which it was to be deprecated that the parties moving in the mattt r did not come forward with a more satisfactory programme. However as it has now rejsolved itself into a committee, it is to be hoped that it will be successful in accomplishing everything in which it may legitimately .interfere. Miss Hetta Fleming has announced her intention of giving a Grand Concert, in aid of the Hinds of the Benevolent Institutiohj on the evening of Friday first, in the Theatre Royal. '" In addition to the attraction which Miss Fleming's own musical abilities lend to the affahy we observe' that she will be assisted on the occasion by Miss Eloise Juno, who will give readings from "Allan Ramsay's " Gentle Shepherd," and the works of 1 Robert Burns, both of which cannot fail to fbe highly appreciated by our community,' lady and gentlemen amateurs will also contribute • to the evening's entertainment, ■■ in.songSy- glees, • duetts. &c./and ? the nProvincialf/Brass Band will be there to lend additional attraction.; •For, a , better idea of ' the -treat which raay-he.expected, we refer our readers ftojthe. programme as .pub-' ! lished in another . ..column..^...
