ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.
0 We do not liold ourselves responsible for ths opinions expressed by our correspondents. TO THE EDITOB OF THE SOUTHLAND TTMES. Sib, — The issue of the Daily News on Thursday last contained a somewhat severe censure on the management of the Telegraph Department in general, and on the writing of the " Telegraphic Messages "in particular. Without wishing to speak in defence of any party concerned, or to discuss the subject, I cannot but remark that, if the Editor of the Daily News feels called upon to enlarge on the opinions expressed by liis correspondents relative to the Telegraph Department, he ought at the same time, for the public benefit, to avail himself of the facilities afforded through that medium to the shipping community. The case I refer to is the arrival of the Albion from Melbourne on Saturday afternoon. Tho arrival of that steamer was duly notified outside the Telegraph Office, and I can vouch that the writmg was very plain. It appears, therefore, rather neglectful that this morning's paper shoidd have only awakened to the fact ofthe Albion bein;* hourly expected from Melbourne. With the impression that the telegraph ought to prove a public boon rather than a subject for public discussion, I beg to remain, COOKE UPON WHEATSTONE. 29th Aug., 1864.
