The barley had reached a height bf three feet and a half, while the wheat was four feet and a half. The heads were long and weirfilled with grain, and gave evidence of the ! most prosperous growth. Chinese Opium t Smuggling. — The Altd California, of" 3lst May, states that the recent China: egg raid at the Custom House, San Francisco, resulted in the seizure of about I^2oo dollars worth of opium. The discovery of this new smuggling dodge has led to * greater caution on the part of " the Custom House authorities, and everything now imported from China is examined in the most thoroughly careful manner. Cashmebe GtOats.— Mr. Edwards has a large drove of Cashmere goats at his place, about four miles east of Stockton, from which he expects to realise something handsome eventually. G-oats will thrive where sheep would perish ; and as herbage is so scarce on our pasture land this season, that many who have not made provision -for their stock by driving them to the tide lands, are in dread of sustaining great loss, it would not surprise us if the goats, which can live and thrive on weeds and bushes, would become profitable to their owner. — Stockton, Independent. To en by a G-eizzly. — The Bed Bluff Independent, of sth May, says : — "A party of seven men went to the head of Mill Creek a few days since, on a prospecting excursion, and seeing a grizzly on the side of the hill, they planned its , capture, each man selecting a tree by which to escape if attacked. On approaching their several places, they foiind the cubj the back of which they broke/ The cries of the cub brought the parent to. the rescue. Une of the party, James Purden, seeing the bear apj-roaching,^ immediately commenced climbing the tree he had selected, and succeeded in getting _some six feet from the ground, when the limb of which he Lad hold giving way, he fell to the gromid just as the bear arrived at the tree. Before he had time to gather from hia £v\ he was seized by the arm, the claw 3 of the bear stripping the flesh and niuscles entirely off. Mijedee in Owens Valley. — T. C. Stallo, of Owens Valley, : gives the following to the Visalia Delta : — Two young men, • named T. I. Hazlett, and I. T. Dimitt, belonging to W. E. Stanterford's train, were on the road in Owens Valley, near the ."..Bench," six or seven miles from the Hawes Meadows, about eight o'clock a.m. of Sunday, 24th April. Mr. Stahterford being some distance off, heard- a pistol / report, and saw the cattle commence to " stampede," and after he had succeeded m heading them off, noticed one , of f the horses- standing without a rider, and saw the other one being ridden off rapidly. On being questioned, he" said, "Tdnicalledmeasonof a b , and I shot him; he asked me not to shoot again and he would take ? it back." The murderer was then suffered .to leave, and he (Mr. S.) went, to the yictim, who only gasped once or twice, .and died. They placed the body in a waggon and. hauled it a short distance, when one of the calves giving out, against many remonstrances, they buried the , body,; Very summarily without a cofmi— placing the calf in the stead of -the dead— thus affording an idea of the.estimate placed- upqn r humans. 5 over . there.
