TARANAKI.
The Herald of 6th inst. publishes the following on the movements of the rebels there : — " Information was brought into town on Monday, that 600 of the enemy under Rewi, Tikaokao. Win. Bang, and others, were on their road to this place, and that most of them had already arrived at Mokau. Colonel Warre threfore with great promptitude determined on meeting them, and accordingly a force of 500 men left town on Tuesday for Waitara, the Colonel and Staff following next morning. Wednesday was spent in exploring in the neighborhood of Te Preijand Manutahi. On Thursday the force crossed the Waitara and camped on the other side, and in the afternoon some friendly native scouts fell in with, three of the enemy on horseback and killed one, Hone Pukoru, or Ngatimaniapoto. On Friday theforce advanced four or five miles to a level with Nikorima's pa at Waihi, and the weather having set in wet, came down by the beach to Waitara again — one part ot it remaining and the rest coming on into town. It was reported just after the expedition setout that the supposed enemy consisted only of women and children, and the truth seems to have been between the two stories — the last account stating that there were 200 men with Rewi and William King, and an indefinite but very large number of women and children, come down probably in search of food. The 200 will no doubt now come on to Mataitawa, where happily they may be found with less trouble, and a good result may perhaps be anticipated if they are attacked before they have recovered from their present agitation."
