TRADE REPORT.

Trade during the week has been rather dull For the past month there have been no importations, an* we find that there are only two vessels laid on from Melbourne for this port. This state of matters will doubtless tend to relieve our stocks considerably. A portion of the damaged cargo of the Si'-otia has been sold by auction ; but being only slightly ila-naged. very fair prices were realised. The high price of flour ha 3 caused rice, potatoes, oatmeal, &c, to advance. The railway works, co long suspended, will bo resumed early in the ensuing week, which will have the effect of imparting more activity in business. On the whole, wo may assert that trade is in a more he«lthy state than it has been for the last two months. The banks still continue their high rate of interest, and refuse to discount for accommodation, although the securities may be first-rate, and many storekeepers, having large payments to make, are not able to be punctual, from the sudden falling off of business. This is doubtless bad policy on the part of the banks, seeing that their interests should be identical with those of the trading community. In anticipation of our usual trade, many have purchased and indented large stocks, and now find themselves in difficulties. • Under those circumstances, the banks should be more liberal than usual, as by so doing their own interests are advanced in proportion to that of the Province generally. The prices at present ruling in our markets may be quoted as follows : — Flour. — £40 per ton. Potatoes. — £10 per ton. Oatjeeai.. — 255. per cwt. Bacon and Hams. — lid. to Is. 2d. per lb. Butter (Colonial). — Is. 4d. per lb. Butter (new D.R.C.).— Is. 2d. Cheese. — Is. to ls>. 2d. per lb. Rice.— 2ss. per cwt. Axe (bulk).— Joule's, £10 per had., for new; old, £7 per hhd. ',-, . Alb (bottled).— l4a. Porter (bottled).— l4s.
