Charg-e op "ZMttcideb. at Ryde. — At the Winchester Assizes, recently, before Mr. Baron Brainwell, Robert Halle tt, aged fifty years, was indicted for the wilful murder of Mary Ann Phillips, a woman with' whom 'lie cohabited. Tho facts of the case were rather singular. The '-prisoner and tho deceased were found in their room, the latter : with her throat cut, and quite dead. The prisoner was lying by her side, and was also cut about the ; throat. As the medical evidence could not prove ; that the deceased could not have committed the act herself, the jury, after two hours' deliberation, acquitted the prisoner. One of the witnesses in the case was the prisoner's son, a lad about sixteen, who was deeply affected at the position in which lie was placed. The jury found 'the prisoner guilty, audi he was': sentenced to penal ; servitude for life.
