SHIP LAUNCHES.
There was lately launched, from the buildingyard of Messrs. Walter Hood and Co., Aberdeen, a fine clipper sliip. Tho name of the vessel is tho . Nineveh ; she has been built for Messrs. George Thomson, jun., and Co., and is to be an addition to their line of Australian packets. Th<* Nineveh is classed A 1 at Lloyd's, and is of the burthen of about 2000 tons. She is to be commanded by Captain Donald, formerly of the Walter Hood. A fine clipper barque, of 270 tons' burthen, has been launched from the yard of Mr. Erancis Robertson, shipbuilder, . Peterhead. She is named the Southland, and is of the following dimensions : — Breadth of beam, 26 ft. ; depth of hold, 12 ft. 9 in. ; and length of keel, 121 ft. The Southland is to be commanded by Captain James Thorn, Peterhead, and will forthwith be put on the berth at Leith, for Dunedin and Invercargill, as one of the Forth and New Zealand Shipping Company's Liners. She was named by the lady of the captain, and the launch was most successful. A magnificent clipper ship, named the Goolwa, has been launched from tho building-yard of Messrs. Hall, Footdec, Aberdeen. The vessel is 790 tons 8.M., 717 register, and will be classed thirteen years A 1 at Lloyd's. Sho will trade between London and Adelaide, Australia, and is tho property of Messrs. Anderson, Thomson and Co., London. She will be commanded by Captain Johnston. The Goolwa is a composite ship, and has all the new and improved apparatus for swift sailing. On April 5, there was launched at Aberdeen, from the yard of Messrs. John Duthie, Sons, and Co., a fine clipper ship of upwards of £)00 tons register, classed A 1 1 _ years, named Sir John [ Lawrence. The vessel is the property of Messrs. j D. Boso and Co., of Aberdeen, and is intended for the Southern trade. A fine iron-screw steamer, named the South ■ Australian, has been lauched from the yard of Mr. John Kay, at Abdcu, Kinghorn, near Kirki caldy. Her dimensions aro : — Length, 222 feet : beam, 2fi feet ; and depth, 15 feet. She will have 1 accommodation for forty saloon passengers, and 1-10 .second-class, and will be fitted with geared oscillating engines of ISO-horse power. She is to be employed in the trado which her name infers. After her launch the vessel was towed to Kirkcaldy, in order to have her equipment* completed. <So
TnE first .serious accident which has befallen nny of the American steamers running to and irom Queenstown oeeured to tbe City of New York 071 March 29. 'Hiis vessel, after a splendid passage from New York, struck upon Daunts Rock as she was entering Queenstown Harbor, and has become a total wreck. All was going on fairly, when the ship at 2.40 a.m., ran with a loud crash upon tho centre of the rock, where she became transfixed, and soon filled with water. Thero were 7S cabin and 75 steerage passengers on board the ship, besides the crew, which numbered about 120. All were saved. The vessel bas become a total wreck. — Home News.
