NOTICE TO MARINERS.
In consequence of a change which the Bands above the Pilot Station at the entrance of this port are at present undergoing, masters of vescels are hereby requested to pay particular attention to signals made them from the Steep Head Flagstaff before they ran for the harbor, as it is possible there might not be sufficient depth of water for the vessel to pass up the channel. No change has taken place, nor is thero a likelihood of any taking place, on the Bar ; but the depth of water about half a mile above the Pilot Station is at present ' only twelve feet (12) at ordinary tides, and fifteen feet (15) at tho highest, and the depth and width of tho channel at this place ia gradually diminishing. A new channel, wide. and deep, running from, a little above the Bombay Rock, almost in a direct line to the Pilot Station, has during the last eighteen months been gradually forming, and an entrance into it through the Sarid Spit abreast of the Pilot Station, where the breadth of the Spit is only about half a cables' length, — anay soon bo expected, as an opening has already began, through which the ebb-tide runa with considerable velocity. Due notice will be given when this opening becomes sufficiently wide and deep to allow vessels to pass through with safety. (Signed) J. B. Greig, Harbor Maater. j — e>
