The letter was sent to the agent at Tunis by the vice-consul ■at G;Plefl^l^l-^oletta/' j Oct. liG.—tyEri Consul G-eneral— Captain "Mohammed Aonn, of the brig Wansour^ '.6£ Tunis, arrived at Leghorn, having announced tome that he has discovered a new island from the masthead, some 120 metres in length, situated in lon. B*3o E., and latitude 3750 IST., exactly on 1 the Cherki Reefs.' 'I fulfiTthe duty of making- known to you this discovery. The movements ,of, the, earth, of which we have experienced strong shocks at Tunis/ may have occasioned that volcanic eruption. Ido not doubt, that the. statement of the captain of the Wansour may be a fact, the importance of which will be great both for science and navigation, more- particularly/ if, from the rocks and of the soil produced by -volcanic eruptions upon the- Cherki Reefs, the new island-' remains permanent.
