February 23. tides. - High water at Bluff Harbor at full and change. "l'l-O; range four to eight feet. High water at New River Heals one hour sooner; there is, however, Very little difference between the time of high water at the head of the Bluff and the jetty at InvercargiU. DAILY TIDE TABLE.

The Jeanie W. Paine arrived at the Bluff on the afternoon of thei 19th instant, bringing about 4000 sheep from Melbourne, and by the courtesy of Mr. Cain, of the firm of Messrs. M'Kenzie and Cain, the contractors, she was allowed to come alongside the wharf to discharge, which proved a great boon to the consignees, and they beg to acknowledge Mr. Cain's willingness in granting them the use of it. The faoHitythus afforded, Mr. Gallop, the BlufF agent of the Jeanie W. Paine, was ablo to clear hor at the Qustoma -the fpllowinjf day, and she dropped down ready for saa the same orening, being only about thirty-six hours in port. The Otago Steam Ship Company.— The Scotia, a large, new and powerful steamship, belonging to the above-named Company, newly formed, is hourly expected at the Bluff, on her way to Dunedin, to be followed by the Albion; and it is the Company's intention to trade regularly to the Bluff, and also extend, their operations to all tha Northern ports. Captain M'Lahlan, of the Omeo so long known and respected while trading from Melbourne to New Zealand, has been appointed their manager in Melbourne. The s.s. William Miskin was removed from the slip and placed on the hard beach at high water yesterday.— Daily Telegraph, Dunedin, 20th February. The Peninsular and Oriental Company's s.s.s Northam left Galle on the evening of the 22nd. January, at seven o'clock ; the Candia, which had broken down about 120 miles from that port, having been towed in that morning, and the mails and passengers transhipped in n few hours. Fine weather was experienced to 18deg. S. latitude j thence to Cape Leuwin had strong southeast winds and heavy head sea; arrived afc King George's Sound afc one p.m. on the 6th instant, and left, after coaling, on the following morning, afc nine o'clock. Prom the Sound she_ has had fresh south-east winds, but noth withstanding the heavy head sea, the distance," over 1,300 miles, has been run in little mare than five days. On the llth, in the afternobi, while stowing the foretopmasfc staysail, a Malay sailor was washed overboard and drowned. , , The engines were stopped, and a boat- wns lowered, but the -man was nofc seen again. Capo Otway was pissed at twenty minutes -past ten a.m.- yesterday, and cinefcy-one boxes of mails wore landed at Queenscliff for the Western District, causing a detention of a quarter of an hour only ;, and from that place the Northam was only two hours and five' minutes in reaching "Hobson's B*y. — Argus. The s.s.s. City of. Hobart left Port Chalmers at six n-m. ou fche'6th instant, and Bluff Harbor afc half-past nine a ra. on the following day. Captain Darby reports having had head and variable winds until the 9th instant, when he encountered a very severe gale which lasted for Several hours ; sin"o then has had fresh breezes — Argils, 13th February. The American barque Japan left Port Chalmers on Saturday, January 24th, nt eleven a m., and the Heads afc three pm. Had heavy westerly gales up to tho 4lh of February, losing jihboom, carrying away fore truss, splitting sails, &c. February Ist, experienced a terrific hurricane from SW", which lasted twelve hours, in lon. 163deg. lat. 46.50 mm. Since that had moderato baffling winds, and squally weather. Passed steamer Aldinga in Bank's Straits, Wednesday, February 10th, at six p m„ wind SE. — Argus, 13th February. Fusileer, from London to Port Phillip, which stranded on the Girdler Sand and got off, lias arrived in tho East India Dock. Lloyd's surveyor reports the ship to be hogged up considerably, and was no doubt broken iv the keel and floors. — Home ANeios. Highflyer, 1012 tons, Enright, fur Sydney, which was in collision with the ship Strathedon, Pile, fbr Sydney, off Beachy Head, pufc back to repair the damages slie had sustained, which were considerable. She was struck on the starboard side abreast the gangway, by the Sfcrathcdon, and was almost cut down to the water's edge. The ships laid alongside each other for seme time and both damaged their rigging. Tbe Strathedon also pufc back to the Easfc India Dosk much damaged, and is now discharging her cargo preparatory to going into dry dock to make good her damage. She came into contact with tbe Highflyer stem on, carrying away her cutwater, foe. Her stem is tobe found also injured, which will have to be removed, and onother replaced. The Highflyer, hoving been repaired, left the Downs on December 22, in prosecution of her voyage. — Ibid Lindsay, Berg, trom Gothenburg to New ZeoZealand, put into Portsmouth December 21, with loss of sails and foretop-gallant-yard and part of deck load washed overboard. — Ibid.
