DIRECTIONS TO MASTER OF VESSELS' BOUND TO RIVERTON.
From the Provincial Qpverhtnetit Gazetit Nor. 91. The entrance to this port being intricate, a stranger should not; under/ any circumstances, attemjrt to sail in without 1 a pilot/ but shouldmake fast to the mooring bnoy painted black, which is placed in twenty-one feet at low water spring tides with the'following bearings : ' Steep' Head, S.E. by E.- '• 1■ > ! North-west end of Stewart's Island, on with Howell's Point, S.b}'W. halfW. r , The flagstaff on Bailey* Point;- Wrjhalf N. The mooring anchors of this tfuoy are placed four hundred and fifty,feet apart,' ea*t and west from each other ; on each side of;the;buov care should be taken in dropping an anebor new by* > not to hook the moorings.' / v' -.;\ * On and after the Ist of November, il 863, bttween sunrise and sunset the following signals will be made at the flagstaff, on Bailey's Point, viz.: — t ; ( ' rt:f> When a vessel is approaching, . the, barber • number from Marry at' a code, indicating in feet the depth of water on the bar at the ,time, wft be hoisted at die north yard, arm* . t A black ball hoisted above this, number will show xhat the sea is too high on the bar for the pilot to get off. , ■ v*'. - Two black balls without ,th«r' numbtr will mean that some recent change has taken plae* in the channel or that it, is, dangerous in -tb* -opinion of the pilot even for a coaster acquainted with the place to attempt to run in. .Vessels outside the bar or at v the mooring buoy, when the pilot cannot, get' off may bold communication with him bj means of Marry**'* signals which in this case will be hoisted jtths south yard arm.
