The Colonist ' contains' a letter from, its correspondent, in which the foUowing paragraph relative to the' discovery of a large nugget at the Buller, occurs :— " A party consisting of six Maories found another nugget at the Lyell on the 14th December, weighing 59 One of them brought it downbn the 15th, 'and it Avas bought by the agent 'of the Bank of New Zealand at £3 11s, per ounce. The shape of it is exactly like a- pistol. 1 ; I believe the party who found it have not found enough gold for the last' two months to pay. for then* (in digger's parlance) "tucker." One Maori named Beno who was tired ,of working so profitless a claim, sold his share to a a Maori named Matthew, and on the morning of the sale, the nugget was found, so that Matthew may consider himself very lucky." The same paper announces with some degree of dissatisfaction "that the Governor's assent has been refused to the Act of. the Provincial Council passed in the recent supple-' mentary session for borrowing £50,000 to develope the. West Coast coal, and £20,000 for the purpose of supplying water to the city of :of Nelson. " The Colo nist states " that the Hon. Header Wood, the Colonial Treasurer, is abotit to proceed to England to negociate the Three Million Loan." It also notices the following important fact : — " The Mary, (Captain M'Lean) which, arrived here on Saturday afternoon from the Buller, brought about 300 ounces of gold, including the pistol-shaped nugget of 59 ounces, which is spoken of in our correspondence from the Buller." On the Ist of January the Oddfellows held , their anniversary. The anniversary of lS6<i was decidedly a considerable improvement on its predecessors. In the evening a dinner was held which gave great satisfaction. The following items appear in the Examiner of the oth inst. : — " OttrG-old Fields.— News received yesterday informs us that several diggers have arrived ovei'land at our goldfields, and that diggers at the Manyles and Teraumea were doing remarkably srell. A most serious case of stabbing with a carving knife had taken place on New Year's Day, in which the steward of the barque Lorenzo Sabinc (Thomas Johnson) was the defendant, and George Martin, second, mate of that vessel was the complainant. The case , had been heard and remanded. The wounded ! m;ui, whose bowels were protruding from the wound, is progressing favorably. A child has been drowned at B-ichniorid, and a fire had occurred in an uninsured house at Motueka — furniture saved. The Lyttlcton steamer arrived tin's morning, and brought Nelson papers to the 7th inst.
