PROSPECTING THE GORGE.
The following reply to the application for Government grant-in-aid has been received : — Q.ueenstow'n, 29th January, ISGI. Sir, — In accordance with the promise made by me this morning to the Gorge Prospecting \ Committee, I ' now do myself the honor to in- j form them, through you, that I have taken into consideration the circumstances under ' ■which the application for aid from the Government is made, and will place at their disposal ■ . a sum nofc exceeding £250 (two hundred' and' fifty pounds) on the following conditions, viz. : — Ist. That an equal sum to that contributed •by Government be- subscribed from other quarters. 2nd. That tlie "works be open to tUc inspection of the Warden of the District, who will pay over from time to time to the Committee the Government contribution as the work proceeds. . , . ■ 3rd, Tlie ground, if proved auriferous, to be allocated only to bona-JUle miners, and its . distribution to extend to as great a number, as circumstances, and the regulations will admit.
