NEW ZEALAND.— RATES OF POSTAGE ON . LETTERS, BOOK-PACKETS, AND NEWSPAPERS, WITH THE REGULATIONS AFFECTING THE POSTING, TRANSMISSION AND DELIVERY OV THE SAME. IN FOHCfi FROM AND AFTER Ist OCTOBER, 1803. Letters. — 1. Inland Letters. — From any part of New Zealand to any other part of New Zealand : — Not exceeding- half an ounce, 2d ; exceeding hnlf un ouuee and not exceeding one ounce, 4d ; exceeding one ounce and not exceeding two cuncc9,Bd; and so on, increasing four pence for every additional omiee or fraction of an ounce. '2. To the United Kingdom. — By Southampton or by direct ship : — Not exceeding' half un ounce, Cd ; exceeding half an ounce and not exceeding one ounce, !s ; exceeding one ounce and not exceeding: two ounce-;, "is ; and so on, increasing; one shilling for every additional ounce or traction of an ounce. To thoCoutiuentof Europeviu Trieste: — Not exceeding- hall an ounce, Is; exceeding- half an ounce and not exceeding one ounce, 2s; exceeding one ounce and not exceeding- two ounces, 4s ; and so on, increasing two shillings for every additional ounce or fractiou of an ounce. G. To Syria and Turkey.— Letters will he forwarded via Alexandria and Jaifa (unless marked for transmission via the United Kingdom), mid will be charged as follows:--Not exceeding half an ounce, lid; exceeding half an ounce and not. exceeding one ounce, Is i(*d ; and so on, increasing one shilling and teu pence for overv additional ounce or fraction of an ounce. 7. To China and the Eastern Archipelago.— Letters addressed to Hongkong, Pcnang, Singapore, any pint of China or Japan, the P.hilHppine Islands, Java, .Sumatra, Borneo, Labuau, tlse Moluccas, and Siuiu, are chargeable as follows :— Not exceeding half an ounce, Is; exceeding half an ounce and not exceeding one ounce, "2s; and so on, increasir.u- two shillings for every additional ounce or fraction of tin ounce. 8. To Naval Officers on Foreign Stations :— Letters addressed to Uilieorrt serving; on board any of Her Majesty's ships on a foreign station, when sent through tin; United Kingdom, are chargeable as follows:— Not exceeding half un ounce, Is; exceed, ing- half an ounce and not exceeding one ounce, 2s; exceeding one ounce and not exceeding: two ounces, •Is; and so on, increasing two shillings for every additional ounce or fraction of an ounce. 9. To Naval Seamen and Soldiers.— Letters sent to or by Seamen and Soldiers in Her Majesty's Service will bo transmitted within the colony, and between the colony and any Post Office in the British dominions, at a charge of one penny, provided that the following; regulations are observed :— (I) Each letter must not exceed half an ounce in weight. (2) It must be superscribed with the name of the writer liis description or class in the vessel or regiment, and sijrned by the Officer at thrj time in command. (:t; The postage must be prepaid. Every letter of this description, posted or received in this colony, not in accordance with the foregoing regulations, will be treated as an ordinary letter. The postage upon these letters mu.s* in all c.ises be paid in advance. ID. Free Letters. — Letters on the Public Service of Her Majesty's Naval and Military Forces are exempted fimn the payment of postage, if bearing the word- •' On Her Majesty's Kfii-vice," mid the signature of tin* Ollic-r in command <if the force on tin 1 service of which tin; letter is despatched. Foyt Office, howeyer, is jiot vesniML.-i'ililc t'ur tho loss of any letter, whether r.rw'isfered or otherwise, persons sending Bunk Notes or Drafts are advised to take the numbers nnd particulars, and to cut the Notes or Drafts in halves, and to send thorn by different pn.sts. Redirection.- -Letters, Newspapers, and Packets will be re-directed from one Post Omee to another on tho written instructions of the person addressed, baton re-direction are chargeable with a new and distinct rate of postage, to be paid on delivery. Penalties, — Any person sanding f,s, exempt from postage letters "not JiuUlii to, oxyraption. or enclosing U o.oinun;uicr(tiaii in the nature of :i letter in any Newspaper or Book Paoitet, is liable to a penalty of £20, Size and Weight.— No book pnoket or packet of newspapers will be received, nor -will any Postmaster bo reqnirod to receive any letter if it exceed two feet in length, o-io foot in width or depth, or three pounds in weight. Book Packets to be Open for Inspection.— Every book packet shall be sent open nt. the ends or sidas, and there shall be nu enclosure sealed or otherwise closed against inspection sent in or with such packet, not 1 anything printed or written in the nntiuq Qf a letter. Contents. — With the Above UiniUitionsj a book packet may contain any number of separate bonks, mtips, prints, or photographs, and any quantity of paper, vellum, "or parchment, either printed, written on, or plain (exclusive of anything in the nature of a letter, whether sealed or open), ivith the binding, covering, or mounting attached to or belonging to such book, print, map, or photograph, and all things legitimately appertaining or nacessary for the transmission of any enclosed literary or artistic matter, but exclusive of glass in any form. The names and address of the sender mty appear on the cover. Overland Carriage. — No Postmaster will be required to receive any book packet for transmission by an overland mail, if from its weight or »ny other cause the packet appear calculated to retard the carrier. Money Orders. — Money Orders maybe obtained find made payable at the following offices in the colony of New Zealand:— i'rovince of Auckland — Auckland, Otahuhu, VVaugarei, and Russell; province of Tu.rana.ki— New Plymouth; province of IJnwke's Bay— Napier; province of Wellington— Wellington and Wungunui; province of KelsonNelson and Collingwood ; province of Marlborough Pjoton and Blenheim; province , of Canterbury— Christe'huroh, Lyttolton, Kaiapoi, and Timaru ; province of Otago— Uunedin, Manuherokia Junction, Oaraaru, Duiistan, Arrow River, _ Waittihuna.Tua-! peka, Queenstown, ...and Tokomairh-o ; province of Southland— lnvercare-ill and Riverton.
