PLEURO-PNEU MONIA IN THE PROVINCE.

We extract the following from the Pro- { vinciul Government Gazette of the 10th January, which publication did not reach us, j we may mention, until yesterday :--• Proclamation by James A. It. Esq.. Superintendent of the Province of Soutliliin'l. — In i)iir.suance of the power in j me vested, I do hereby proclaim and declare that from and after f..e day of the d.ite ' hereof, tlie district of the Province of Soutli- ' land sliiill be and be deemed to be an Infected District, within the meaning of the "Diseased Cattle Act, 1861." Given under my hand an:l issued under the Public Siml of this Province, this sixtetnih day of January, One thousand ei^ht. hundred and sixty-four. J. A. 11. Minzies, Superintendent. Eegulatio is under provi^i ;ns of "Diseased Cattle Act, 180 1." In pur.-uiancj of the power in me vested, I, James A \i. Menzies, require, Superintendent of the Province of , .Southland, do hereby make and issue the lol lowing' regulations for destroying diseased cattle within the Province of Southland. 1 It shall be lawful for the Inspector of Ccii tie for the province of Southland, appointed under the provi.-ions of the "Diseased Cattle Act, I SGl,'' to muster and inspect any cattle within the said Province, with a vi.w to satisfying himself whether any such caitle are inft cted with the disease called Pleuro-pneumonia, or any other infectious or contagious disease. 2. If such Inspector shall be reasonably satisfied that any such cattle so insp cted by him, as aforesaid, are actually infected with the said disease called Pleuropneumonia, or any other infectious or contagious disease, he shall forthwith give notice to that effect to the owner of such cattle, or to the person in charge thereof, anu it shail be the duty of such owner or person in charge, within twenty-four hjursal't^r such notice, to destroy the samt\ 3. If such cattle shall not be so destroyed within twc.ity-four hours after .'Uch notice as aforesaid, it shall be lawful for the Inspector to cause the same to be destroyed forthwith. 4. Any person hindering or preventing the said Inspector from mustering or inspecting any cattle under the provisions of these Regulations, or refusing or neglecting to destroy any cattle wiiiiin twenty-four after notice given, as provided by Clause No. 2 of these Regulations, or in any wav offending against, these liegulaiione, shall forfeit and pay any sum not less than One Pound nor moia than One Hundred Pounds. J. A. K. Menzies, Superintendent. Superintendents Office, Southland, 16th January, 1804. We understand that the first appearance of the disease in this Province was noticed amongst some cattle which had been brought across the border from Otago by a man named Jenkins, and lhat at the present time, some cattle near Winton Bush are infected, the infection having been pretty clearly traced to the above-mentioned source. The supposition that the disease was first brought over in some cattle from Victoria, is therefore incorrect.
