TOWN BOARD.

Wednesday, 13th January, 1864. The Board met at three o'clock ; present — (he Chairman/Messrs Grieve, Calder, M.lvor, I/ivesey, Garthwaite, Seandrett, and B*aven. THE KECENX APPOTSTMKST OF EXGINEEK TO THE BOARD. The following resolution, moved by Mr Calder, and seconded by Mr Livesey, was carried: — "That in order to remove any doubt as to the validity of Mr 1\ Richardson's appointment of Town Engineer, the 'same be hereby iully contitmed, and further" that the Solicitor to the Board be instructed to prepare forthwith the necessary deed of. agreement between Mr Richardson and the Board." ' ./ ' THE LEVEL OF THE GRATIiVGS IN DEE StREET In consequence of a, memorial , (presented by M> Livesey), from a number of the residents in Dee Streetj^complaining of the levels of the gratings ' f j£bvr being formed in that street, the Engineer submitted the following report :--" That the gratings as laid suit a considerable number of the buildings, and tTmtof tha remainder they arc -about onethird too .'.high,^consequently if any alteration was made at must be a particular aud not general: alteration, and that the plan being the work of another engineer, it would not become him to -suggest any alteration* although perfectly willing to carry out any instructions received from the Board." TOWN IMPROVhMeNTS. The following resolution was assented to - "That it is of the utmost importance advantage should be taken of the 'summer weather to° initiate some plan of operation to be undertaken by the Board, sufficiently comprehensive to meet the requirement of the town ; and with a view to carry tins out, a committee be appointed to coufer with the Engineer, reporting the result as soon as practicable, and also to report on the present and the estimated fiuancial position of the Board for the current year : committee to consist of Messrs G. Al. K. Clarke, S. Beaven and the mover.'' COMMUNICATION FttOM THE SUPERINTENDENT. The following communication from His Honor the Superintendent was received by the Board : — " Superintendent's Office, Southland, 1 1 Mi January, 1864. Sir, I have to request that you will inform me what the Town Board proposes to do with reference to the formation and maintenance of Dee-street, and those portions of Clyde and Tweed streets leading from thence to the Jetty. Very considerable works will be required on that line of sticets, in order to put them in a proper state of repair before the approach of winter. As you are aware fiom a former communication, the Piovineial Government has offered to co-operate in executing this work ; and I make this inquiry now in order to ascertain as soon as possible how this assistance cari best be given, and that the work may be commenced without delay. I have the honor to be, Sir, your obedient servant, J. A. R. Menzies, Superintendent. To the Chairman of the Town Board, Invercargill." Further consideration of the letter was deferred, until the report of the previously appointed committee had been received. CONTRACTS ACCEPTED. The following contracts were accepted, •viz.: — Messrs Kail and M 'Donald, for street crossings as per schedule of prices annexed to specification ; Mr Linfield, lor writing names of streets on tin, ut the rate of 4d par four-inch letter. LEGALITY OF THE ASSESSMENT, The Clerk was instructed to bunjj a case of last year's assessment (under £20) before he Heiidiint Magistrate's Court, in order to est.it3 validity. The Board tlien adjourned.
