RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
Tuesday, 12th. January, 1864. (Before _M. Price, JLsq., It.M.) A. DisTKEs3iNG .Casb — Alfred Oakley, pianist, was charged with 'threatening to ' destroy, himself. The defendant's condition had been brought under the notice of the Commissioner of Police, in consequence of a i letter which he had forwarded to -the Resi- | dent Magistrate, in .which hejiad stated his j intention of "making, away with himself. When -he was arrested -by the' constable, that morning, they found two bottles of poison on. his person.. It appeared that the defendant, who had been engaged at the Theatre Royal, '■ as->pianist, was in a? very depressed : state- of mind, in consequence , of the faithlessness of iiiswife; iwhtfhad left Tiini,i and was living with another man, jn In vercargill. , D.rs M' Clare i and; -Maxtny^ both of whom h ad examined the defendant, informed the B»nch:that ; although -He' was -not actually of iinsound mind, he was in such a melancholy; anddepTessed" state, that" it might resrilt In^ more serious . consequences, or in the commission of. some .injury VtoJiunself. Mr Thatcher,' who 1 was in the Court, and by whom the defendant was engaged,. 6aid he was willing to take care of him,' until he: recovered,; bufc the magistrate thought it would be more advisable to let him ha.ye medical advice andlaitention which he would receive in the Hospital. He should therefore remand him for th/it purpose.
