DUNEDIN COMMERCIAL.

(l r rom the Daily Times, January 9th). Business still continues very at the same time we observe rather more has been done yes-' terday ami to day in loading jjoods for up-eomitry. The chief objects of in'erest in commei cial i-irck-s this week have been the large auction sales, of which we have had several, and from wltich it was . expected that we should be able te establish a market value for certain leading staples.; but such has not proved to be "the case, inasmuch as importers preferred to withdraw their goods altogether rather than submit to the low prices offered, which in most instances, show a heavy losß on cost. ;■ Sugar —The cargo per Amyous was again offered fry auction on Wednesday, and with the exception of a few bags of medium white, sold at: 365. the wjsole was bought in, the prices offered being 1-s under those bid when the sugar was first offered, although in the interval, we have received : advices of an advance-of -£S per ton in Sydney and Melbourne. -Sin^e the auction, however, about 600 bags have been gold at the merchant's reserve. Tea- —Two very large auofeion sales were held this week, on Monday and Tuesday, -chiefly of. low qualities; but no business resulted, as prices ] offered were much under even the low reserves which the importers had placed on the teas. JSpileing Materials. —The cargo of- deals, ex. Alice Walton, just arrived from Gothenburg, • was ©Serad at uetion on Thursday, and the whole sold »*t the following prices : —9 x3S5d to s\d ; 11 x3, fi^.l; 7x 3, 4sd; 7 x 2J, Z\(\. This may be considered a very satisfactory sale, considering that the stocks in dealers' hands at present are very large, and further, that the building trade is by no means so lively as was at one time anticipated it W'-nld be at this season. Galvanized Iron —No transactions of impdrtenee to record, stocks accumulating, and prices tend downwards. Tasmaxiax Pkoogce. —There was a laige by auction to-day of Tasmanian produce, consisting ot oats, bran, wheat, laams and bacon, cheese, butter, &c, but the whole was withdrawn, as buyers showed no disposition to come near importer's reserves, which" in-most, instances were under cost. It i* understood the produce is now firmly held for higher prices than would have been taken at auction. Bsee (Bulk axd Bottlk). —Bulk ale is a litt'e more inquired for, and we quote Bass's No 3, £8 5s ; bottled beer is in fair demand; Teonerit's pale aie brings readily lls 6d, other brands, lQs'6dto lls; stout, lls for^Byass and Victorian stores.
