Cm. S-, aud lon. 29>1. 47m. W., t«to(k On board his ship 'he crew and passengers of th«7Julie Cl/iro, and assisted tho barque John Rliymeii r Which two vessels had been in collision. The following extract from tbe Exodus' official log give* the foil particulars of the disaster : — 1 7th " October, lar. 22r1. Gm. S-, long. 29<1. 47m. Mr. ! Porter, the chief officer, reported two ships to ' windward, and apparently in iliatress, the weather- " rfost ship signalling for immediate assistince. an^ ' ihe other with the American ensign reversed. Blood towards "tiem, aud found that the weiither- ■ most "one was f.ie Dutch barque Julia Clare, C.ipt. Osternom. of and from Amsterdam, bound for JJatavia. Sent a boat on boar I, in charge of the Chief officer, nnd ascertained thnt the ship wa« in • sinking state, uimnfr been in collision with the American barque John Rhymes, oi Belfast (S\ , Me.), from Callm\ bound to Antwerp, with a I cargo of guano. At about three o'clock tbe oame morning, the master, crew and passengers of the Dutch vessel, in all 28 souls, then came on board ' the Exodus. Tue Americnn vesßel hnd four feei of water in the hold, one of tho pumps choked, . and was turowine portion of cargo overboard, and prayed that the Eto^us should remain by her. On the same afternoon the captain of the John Rhymes came on board the Exodus, and stated that he thought he w^uld be able to save his vessel, as they had gained on the leak, if some of the Duch ere r and passengers would come on board 10 assist him. , Communicated this to Capt«in Osteroom and his passengers, but they all entreated Captain Williams not to accept the proposal,- saying that after leav- ' ing their own vessel they durst not g«> on board another in a sinking stato. TJander these circumstances, had no alternative but to proceed fo Rio de Janeir \ which was the nearest port, not feeling justified in leaving co many souls in so precarious a condition : also having neither accommodation or sufficient "water to proceed on the voyage with so many e.vtra people. Advised the captain of the John Rhymes to make all tbe sail he could, and • follow, and at the same time sent six of the Exodu s crew (who had volunteered) on board to assist him. He thon returned to his vessel and sent some of his valuable goods on bo.ird, in case of his having to leave his vessel during the night. Remained in company with him, and communicated daily until the 22nd October, when in lat. 23 °13 S., and long. 40 =40 W., or about fifty miles from Cape Frir-o, when tha master of the American vessel came on board, and stated that he considered bis vessel safe enough to go such a short distance, the passenger* and crew of the Dutch j vessel then went on the John Rhymes, and the Exodus proceeded on her voyage ; bfltwe are given to understand not before tbey had thanked Captain Williams in the warmest language tor his great attention, and very kind treatment. We suppose and hope that this will not be the last that Captain Williams will hear of his having put himself to •uch inconvenience, but tbat be and his crew will : be suitably acknowledged by the home authorities. — Melbourne Herald.
