Tlie Bench could not accept the | •excuse, aud fined him £1, | The Eefhctsoe Drink..— James Buchanan was charged by Henry Rodgers with committing an assault on him. The complainant j stated that as he was going home on the prcvi >us night about half-past eleven o'clock, accompanied by a man who happe icd to be going his road, they came to where the defendant was standing over another man ' lying on the pavement in EJsk street. Defon- | dant wanted them to assist him ti take his j mate home as he was drunk, and because complainant and his companion refused to a the part of the good Samaritan, de'endaiit and his mate, who got up off the ground, made a rush at them. Complainant's compulsion was struck, bat he (complainant) escaped by running away. Defendant, who could only plead the general excuse of diunkenness, was lined 40s, or seven day's imprisonment. Gas e-s Dismissed. — F. J. Sullivan, of Deestreet, was summoned for allowing a nuisance to exist on his premises. The Bench being informed that the nuisance had been removed, tlie case was dismissed. George Walker, summoned for having unregistered dog, was discharged, as it was shown that subsequent to the serving of the summons, the dog had been registered. CIVII. CASES. Maktek V. HOLLAND. Mr Weston appeared for the defendant. The case had been remanded from Thursday in order to allow the defendant to call witnesses to prove that the plaintiff had not executed the work in a proper manner. Two witnesses having done so, the Bench reduced the plaintiff's claim to Ll 7s Od, for wliich a verdict was given.
