TOWN BOARD.

Friday, 12th Dbcemiser, 18S3. The Board met at 4 o'clock. Present — The Chairman, Alessrs Jaggers, Lockhait, Reynolds, M'lyor, and Livesey. THE DEE STREET GRATIN'CfS CONTRACT The Chairman after referring to the laxity of members of the Boaid in the performance of their duties, by absenting themselves from the r gular meetings, read a letter from Mr M-iharg, declining to proceed with the contract for laying down the gratings in Deestreet, on the ground of a miscalculation in preparing his estimates of the cost of the work. The Chairman remarked that in future it would be advisable to enforce the conditions, and compel the payment of the deposit on the acceptance of a contract. Mr Livesey presented :i petition which, he said, was signed by every resident in Dee Street, requesting an alteration in the plans and specifications for the gratings, so that the gratings might be laid down closer than originally intended. In connection with the same tubject, a deputation, consisting of Alessrs Caey Brothers, Williams and Keen, was introduced. Mr. Carey infoimed the Board that the residents were apprehensive that the Board in carrying out the contract would obstruct one of the principal drains in the street. The deputation also endorsed the request of the petitioners as to the alterations in the gratings. TJie Chairman informed the deputation that in carrying out the work, the drain referred to would not be injured. With regard to the required alterations, it was agreed to by the Board to have fresh plans and specifications prepared to meet the wishes of the petitioners, they having guaranteed any extra expense, which was estimated at £444. The subject of calling for fresh tenders was mooted. Some members ilpf the Board were for giving the tender to t Messrs Burgoyne and Son, who. although not being the next lowest to Mr Maharg, were, in their opinion, the only eligible tenderers *■ who had complied with the regulations in sending in their tender. Other members of the Board advocated the advisability of submitting, the contract again to public competition, especially as Burgoyne aud Son were not the next lowest tenderers. Eventually it was agreed to re-advertise for tenders, the resolution for adopting that course being carried by the voies of the Chairman, Messrs Garthwaite, Reynolds, and Livesey, against those of Messrs Jaggeis, M'lvor and Lockhart. THE MANURE DEPOT. A letter From several nightmen, informing the Board of the prohibition to deposit any more night soil in the Manure Depot, was referred to the Engineer. THE lATE ENGINEER. On the subject of the handing over by the late Engineer of the books and documents belonging to the Board, it appeared by the statements of some of the members that Mr. Weston, the solicitor to the Board, had been dilatory in carrying out the instructions of the Board in the matter. The Clerk was I directed to again intimate to Air, Weston the 'lesirc of Jhc Board. The Board then adjourned.
