ODDFELLOWS BALL.
A ball, in honor of the anniversary of th> institution of the Shamrock, Rose, and Thistle Lodge of Oddfellows, in Invercargill, •was held on Friday in the new theatr c in Conon-street. The theatre, which had been placed at the use of the Committee by Mr .Puttelkow, the proprietor, was fitted up as a most commodious ball room. Although the unfinished state of the theatre necessitated considerable additions, the committee had succeeded in completing the decorations very expeditiously. The room presented a very gay and pretty appearance, by the aid of flags, flowers, and evergreens, which were profusely distributed around. At the lower end of the room, the insignia of the Order formed a conspicuous ornament. About two hundred ladies and gentlemen were present; and as a great number of the latter wore the decorations of the Brotherhood, it imparted a very brilliant effect to the gay scene. The spaciousness of the theatre, afforded ample room to the dancers, whether in quadrilles formed of the most numerous "sets," or in other dances. Excellent music was furnished by Messrs Herz, ( piano 1, and Hunter, (violin); a supper, comprising every requisite was catered for by Mr Grant, of Dee-street, while the stimulate or refreshing liquids were from the cellar of the adjoining Provincial Hotel. The committee -who arranged the affair, are so deserving of thanks that we have pleasure in giving their names as follow : — Messrs Muir, Webster, De Joux, Higgins, Richards, Jacobi, and Newton, nor must we forget the gentlemen who officiated so admirably as stewards, viz : — Messrs Monkman, Kingsland, Moffatt, Lamond, Cheyne. Mr Bowman performed the duties of iVI.C. Amongst those present we noticed Brothers C. N. H. Baggot, P.G., John Muir, 0.M., Webster, N.G., De Joux, VG, Kingsland, (Honorary Hecretary to the Lodge), H. B. Monkman (Treasurer), Brighton, P.G., also, Messrs Maharg, Brayton, ■Watson, "W". Young, Moir, Downes, Johnson, Motfller, Miller, Corser, Clapp, Goodwillie, Stewart, Lind, Monroe, Sanders, &c. Dancing was kept up until an early hour of the morning, and despite the length of the programme, so much enjoyment appeared to have been dciived by the numerous guests, that -they were reluctant to leave. The ball was the first given by the Oddfellows of Invercp.nall ; we hope it will not be the last of such pleasant reunions.
