We take the following items of intelligence from the Auckland correspondent of the Wellington Advertiserx—' By the Wild Wave, yesterday (October 0), from Lyttelton, 60 volunteer military settlers arrived here* The majority of them joined at Christchurch. The rebels have erected another fortification at Pukekawa, on the opposite side of the river, inland about three miles, and half way between the Bluff and Tuakau. Tha enemy's line of defence, at present known, consists of Paparata Pah, to 'the right, Mere-mere to the centre, and Pukekawa, to the left, with probably several intervening posts, inferior in strength, to the three principal fortifications. Last Monday, (1 1 th inst.), Lt., Johnson of the 40th Regiment, was shot dead by the rebels in ambuscade. They, the rebels, have innumerable scouts to bring them every information, when they prepare to take any advantage that may be derived from any change in our motions; but this guerilla sort of warfaie cannot now last much longer, as we ever^y day. expect an. attack on some of their strong-holds, when spies will be of little use to thetn. . . . Last Monday His Excellency the Governor, passed through Drury for the front, accompanied by a mounted escort ; Kb is'gorie, it is supposed to visit and consult the general, or he intends to be a spectator of the great events oi war now about to occur to such an extent as was never before beheld in the annals of New Zealand. .* ; . On the 13th, a nephew of tke ,Rev. Mr Hamlin, was snot dead by the rebels, Mr Wallace was woundel and two bullocks shot from an ambuscade. ... '
