INQUEST ON THE BODYj An inquest oti the body of William Ree. aged twenty-three months, was heid on Mondav, at noon, within the Police Barracks, before 11. M'Culloch, Esq., J.P., and the following Jury : — Messrs R, Shaw (foreman), M. Salek, C. Neustadt, F. Corser, Robert Gaven, G. Hatch, E Hargan, Q. W. Harkness, James Gaven, S. Cusack, T. Adamson, and T. Hemingway. The Jury havior, with the Justice and Mr Commissioner Weldon, seen the body of the deceased,

Mary Ann Hoe was callel, who said : lam the mothi r of th" dece-.'.sed ; I wa? very ill in bed on the rooming of my child's death, the 24th instant ; Iwe tto hed about 10 ; a good while afterwards I asked where William was, and my little girl said he was outside ; about half-past 10 I got up and saw the two children playing outside ; after a little I lay down again ; later on I asked where the boy was, ancl the little girl said she didn't know; I then got up and went down the road singing out for liim, but got no answer ; the little giil went away playing, and on going near the well, cried out tliat he was there ; I found him floating and pulled him out ; his face was downwards ; 1 took off his clothes then, and tried all I could to restore him, hut uselessly ; his little chest was warm, but he was dead ; I wrapped him up in a blanket, and sat by the fire with him ; about 12 o'clock I laid him down on his bed and ran away for one of the neighbors ; the nearest neighbor came up as soon as I asked her ; only the little girl was playing that morning with him. By a Juryman — The well was uncovered ; it was four or five feet deep ; I do not think the children had quanelled ; I did not think of sending for a medical man. By another Juryman— lt would be about half-an-hour after I last saw him that the child was found drowned.

Dr Grigor said — I have seen the body of the child; there were no marks of violence on it ; it had the appearance of death by drowning, but not to the extent visible in case-* of adults.

The Jury at once returned a verdict o: " accidental death by drowning."
