TOWN BOARD.

A meeting of the Town Board was held on the a'f ternoon of Wednesday at three o'clock. Present — Messrs. T. M. K. Clarke (Chairman) M'lvor, Reynolds, Grieve, Hay, Jaggers, Garthwaite, Lockhart, Engineer and Clerk. The clerk read the minutes oil last meeting, which were confirmed. CELLAR-FLAPS. ESK STREET. A memorial was read from several residents and proprietors in Esk-street, praying that the Board take action so as to make the centre of the road fit for dray traffic. Mr Carthwaite moved that tenders be called for formation of this street. ASSESSMENT. Permission was granted to the assessors, to extend the time for the completion of assessment to the 28th -im-taat. RESIGNATION:. A letter was read frcm Mr J. T. Downes, resigning his seat as a member of theTown Board, by reason of business -engagements. SOLICITOR TO THF. HOARD. A letter was read from Mr Weston, stating that he could not attend the raeeiin-g, through professional engagements. Mr M'lvor th.>UKht the affairs of the Town Board should have priority over any other. DEE-STREET. Mr Lockhart thought they should look into their finances before doing anything with Dee-street. He did not think they should take any works upon them which the Government mi»ht do. They ought, after the example of a neieghbouring Province, to get the Government to make one leading thoroughfare. The Chairman said he understood that the Government would only metal the street, and that the Board would have to construct the footpaths. Mr Jaggers «aid he thought the footpaths should be taken into consideration by the Board. Mr M'lvor begged to remind his learned friend that they were Working under an Ordinance now. He thought they ought not to patch up the Government work. Mr Garthwaite moved that the question be adjourned to next week. Mr Lockhart did not think they ought to say "We will do a thing," without being asked to do it. Mr M'lvor said .it was a good tiling that the Dee-street people were taking the matter 'up.' Let them hold a meeting, and see who was to blame. Mr Hay seconded the motion. Mr Lockhart said that as it was a question of great interest, he thought it should lie over till the meeting got their answer from the Government. Mr M'lvor said they must first know what position the Board was in, before doing anything at all. Mr Reynolds, in order to test the feelings [ofthe Board, would move that side paths be i formed in Dee Street, on the same prii ciple as those in Tay Street. Mr. Jaggers seconded. After some desultory conversation, Mr. Hay suggested that they wait till the result of the application to Government by the public meeting be heard. Mr Reynolds ultimately withdrew his motion. Mr Jaggers moved that the Clerk be instructed to ask the Superintendent what his intentions were with regard to Tay-street, , Mr Hay seconded. Mr M'lvor said the Government ought to go on with Dee-street. They were 'the meanest lot he ever knew. As for the Board, they were always going about like a parcel of hens, scraping and scratching to get a few hundreus, they would never be able to do any good. FINANCES. Mr Hay moved that a committee be appointed to enquire into the state of the Finances. Mr Jaggers seconded, and the motion was carried. . TAY-STEEET. Mr Lockhart moved for estimates by the Engineer," of the probable cost of metalling and pitching Tay-street, aud of consti uction of a plank road .18 feet wide, and metalled. The Engineer said' his idea was, in one chain roads, to metal 16 feet rather than 24
