When off Cape Sounders she encountered a heavy gnle from the south-west, and forced to put back to Otago Heads ; proceeded to sea again on Friday, at 1 p.m., and when off Cape Waipapa, on Saturday, at noon, was caught in another very heavy gale'trom the south-west, ' and obliged to put into Waikavn, where she remained until yesterday morning at 7 a.m., when she left and arrived in the New River at 3 p.m. She brings a very heavy cargo, and a fair compliment of passengers. The Sir William Eike.— ln regard to this vessel, some time ago at the BlufF, we givp the following extract from the Glasgow E a tmer of July 4:— "The charge against the owners of this vessel was, as our repders are awnre, that she had been allowed to go to sea without the quantity of ■water as directed by the Passengers' Act. The case, which had been before the Court on two previous diets, was decide . by Sheriff Hell, on Wednesday, in favor of the Company. The grounds on which the Sheriff founded hi* judgment were, that although the quantity of water was not sufficient for all on board, still" it was legally suflicient for the passengers, and the Act only recognises passongors. The crew and cabin passengers wore not protected by the Passengers' Act, but they had a remedy under other acts." Messrs H. T. Wilson, Chambers and Co, of Liverpool, the well-known agents of the White Star Line, purpose running a monthly line_ of packets from London to the various ports of New Zealand. The first vessel, tho Albert William, n fine new 6hip of very high eluss, 12 years and 20 years, will sail for Otngo on the sth of August, it may bo readily understood with what spirit and enterprise the trade is intended to be prosecuted when it is learnt, that in addition their tplenlid fleet of ships eight new iron vessels of larger tonnage and the most approved construction, are now being builr.
