Sydney, 31=t August. On Saturday, Sergeant Stephenson and ;three troopers, having got on the track of some bushrangers, followed them up to a place fifty miles from Goulburn, where they found seven in a public-house. Lowry, who was one of them, fired three times at Sergeant Stephenson, but without effect. The Sergeant then •■fired and shot Lowry in the throat. He died shortly afterwards. A general attack was then made, which resulted in the police securing two of the men, several of the horse", and a quantity of property wliich they had stolen from the station, lt is proposed here that ths Intercolonial rowing match shall take place in the middle of .November. An inquest has been held on Lowry, the bushranger, and a verdict of justifiable homicide returned. They had dismounted, and were rcconnoitering, when the rascals surprised them, wounded the black tracker, stole their horses, and fled. Mr Barnes, a storekeeper, was killed here for resisting some bushrangers on a plundering expedition. He was shot through the head. All music and dancing licences have been cancelled in the town, Maitland, 31st Aug. At the Criminal Sessions to-day, Wilson, the murderer of Peter Clarke, was sentenced to death.
