The following concluding paragraph of the War Minister's notice, posted up here, deserves a remark : — " If the settlers can do better for them- | selves than take 4s. per day for military 1 service in defence of their own property, that fact is. to Mr. Russell's mind, a proof that there is no real danger in the district. (Signed) *' F. D. Fenton." — And a truly logical deduction Suppose my house were on (ire. and I offered L 2 to a man with an engine to put it out, and he said, "No, I must have L 4;" that is a proof, I presume, that the house is not really on fire! Or if 4s. per day will not" prove sufficient to support a man on duty, and his wife and family at Auckland or elsewhere in a place of safety, that fact is to the settler's mind a proof that he had better earn 6s. or Bs. per dayjn some other way, and not have to ask pauper rations for his famih.
