H[ For several years past a small party of j^Riatives have been located on one of the reserves near ihe North Head. have employed themselves in Juborfor the settlers, in fishing, and in the of a part of the reserve. By means they have obtained a good and have been able to enjoy of the comforls of civilised life. BBThey have always Jived on good terms HBwith the settlers, by whom they have 'been kindly treated and assisted in jHthe hour of affliction and neeessiiy. Re events, however, appear to have their equanimity. The advance ' IB into the Waikato has caused the departure Uof a portion of them, who have gone to refl^Bjoin their tribe at Taupo on the Wairoa. JH Although they were known to be favorJH able to the King movement and the Land |H League, it is not considered probable that H|they will ever be found in the ranks ■ of the enemy. ■B Of the loyalty and peaceful intentions of 9«B those that remain no fears ax-e entertaind. S A deputation of the North Head Volunteers jfi headed by Captain W\nyanl, visited them jK a few days ago, and explained the object of H the settlers in forming a local force, and w iissured (hem that so long as they pursued JB their usual avocations and conducted them■s selves properly, they would be permitted mm to occupy their wkares, and be protected |B from molestation. At the same time they |H were reqnestecl to keep within doors after B. sunset, and to entertain no strangers with B out the permission of the officer command|H ing. They appearod guile satisfied with KB the conditions of their future tenure and jHj promised to fulfil them faithfully.
