MELBOURNE COMMERCIAL.
(From the Argus. 11th Aug.) The markets have been altogether unsettled by the mail news. Tlio commercial items which have, reached this city by telegram have exhibited but little of detail. Shipments were not decreasing, and money was ouster. From India mid the E:ist we have confirmation of the advices received by t.he l:ist m:til with reference to f.)i« shipments of t.p«. rice., nnd other merchandise. We lenm from China that iho Kttriok sailed from Foo Chow on the 3rd June, with a full cargo of ten. Tun Kingfisher bud also siiled from Kong Kong for this port. Messrs Fraser and Cohen offered to-day the cargo of the. Santiago, from Mauritius, consisting of 7/591 bags sugar. The importers evidently felt unwilling to concede anything on the last sale prices, and but lit tie sold under the hummer. Immediately afterwards, however, in the room, nearly half the cargo was placed at rates showing an improvement in value. The prices realised were as follows : — 2-ls for bright ration, 27s 6d lor fine brown, 28s to 30s for good counters, 31s to 3ls 6d for fine do, yellow crystals 345, middling white do 30s. Messrs Greig and Murray sold to-day 100 bhds English alo (all faults) at L 3 to L 3 10s per hhd : and at their roomn, invoices ot crockery, at fair rates. Messrs J Lyons and Co sold at their new mart, liourke-strect, 05 cases and bales of general merchandise, at prices far in advance of previous ones, which may be attributed tothelarjje attendance of the trade, consequent on the opening of the new premises. The biddings throughout the sale were most spirited, and a general progressive advance was evinced by all classes ot' purchasers.
