NEW CALEDONIA.— DISCOVERY OF GOLD.

We are in receipt of the Moniicur of New Caledonia up the 28th iilfc. The most important intelligence is the news that gold has been discoverered by Monsieur Lozeron, at Houehiahotnme — a valley about two miles from the church at Puebo, one of the harbor.3 of New Caledonia, not far distant from the Port de France, the principal settlement on that island. The discovery was announced on the 28th June, and caused great excitement throughout the colony. The fortunate prospecting party left the Port de France on the 27st March last, and hare since that lime been busily occcupied in that search for the precious metal which has just proved successful. There can be no doubt as to the truth of the discovery ; but whether in New Caledonia gold will ever be iound in .quantities to sufficient to entitle that island to be looked upon as being, in a o'ommerciui point of view, a gold producing country — yet remains to be ascertained.
