Oneoif the feyv, important auction sales which occur in this city, took place to-day at the sale rooms of Messrs MLmdress, Heyburn: and Co, when the cargo of tho Giiidaleite, from the Mauritius, was disposed of. A striking exemplification of the existing stagnation of trade in Dunedin was presented by the result of this sale. The prices realised, were, under the circumstances, equal to any expectation that.had been formed, but scarcely any portion of the cargo passed into the hands of the retailers. This is an unusual circumstance, but did not prevent the greater part of the cargo from being placed.. .Really good sugars realised a shade over Melbourno quotations, but inferior sorts did not, and several • lots were knocked down at rates slightly below the prices nominally current in that market. Ration sugars, however, as is always the case in this market, attracted no attention. Only one lot ol 100 bags having changed hands. The following quotations show the result of the sales, the s ugars beinu sold in bond ; — -Brown ration (Sauve Torre,) £15; Good yellow (Medine), £24 ss; Second counter (Mont Trioraphe), L 24 to L 24 10s ; Fine ditto (Mont Piton), L 26 15s to L 27 ss; Finest counter (liarraquo), L 29; (Basin), L 26; Yellow crystals (St. Antonio), L'2s; ( Avenir), L 2 7; Fine ditio (Bonne Mere), L2S 5s ; Medium white crystals, inferior samples, (Belle Vue), L 26 15s to L 27 10s; (Bonne Mere), L 23. Moro than 3700 bags were disposed of. A few Houses in town have experienced a slight increase of business during the last few days • but tliis is by no means .generally the case. The total amount of loading leaving for the country has ns yet shown no signs of iuci-ease. Rates for cartage are somewhat improved, owing principally to the occupation of a number of drays in carting goods from Dunstan and Wakouaiti, to the Hogburn diggings, and also to the long detention which others have experienced during the past fortnight. The total number of drays offering for loading has from these causes sensibly diminished of lato.
