Highway Robbery near Elphinstone. — Yesterday information was received at the Detective Office, iv Sandhurst, that on the previous day a man named John Wilkinson, while on tramp near Elphinstone, was met by two men on the road, one of whom had his face covered with black crape. They called on him to stand and give up his money in the usual manner adopted by that kind of gentry. They then searched him and took from Mf^ pockets their contents, consisting of fifteen shillings in silver, and a bank book. They also stripped him of his blankets, which he had in his swag. Not content with robbing the man, they next dragged him into the bush, and tying hipito a tree, the man who had his face disguised deliberately pulled out a pistol and fired a couple of shots at Wilkinson ; one of the shots "carrying away two or three of his fingers. The foregoing statement was made by Wilkinson to the detectives at Castlemaine, where he arrived on Monday night. — Bendigo Advertiser, July 1. John Lundy was an inveterate toper. After a long spree John came to Dr. Homes, and promised him that he would not drink any liquor for one month. But John soon forgot his promise or broke it, and took his bitters privately,, that the doctor might hot know it. One day John undertook to drink a gallon of beer for a wager ; and while accomplishing it, Dr Homes came in. John saw, him, and said, " Well, doctor, I suppose you think I am a poor one to keep my promise?" Oh, no," replied Dr Homes, "I do not, for I see you are fool fitting now.
