ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

j WE DO NOT HOLD OURSELVES RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OPINIONS EXPRESSED BY Otffc CORRESPONDENTS. (To the Editor of the Invercargill Times.) Sir, — Having perceived in your issue of the I 16th June, a sort of sea-lawyer's squib signed by Mr J. C. B. Grant, the master of the barque Pet, of Hobart Town, accusing me of defaming ths Heads' pilots of the New River, I beg publicly to state that Mr J. C. B. Grant's assertions are untrue, as I have never inserted a paragraph in any newspaper relative to the said pilots ; how. ever, when I went alongside the barque Pet, she certainly was in a very bad and dangerous posi? tion. She was not at the Bombay Bock as he states, bufc aground hard and fast between flu Guiding Star Rock and the Spit, on the rock side ofthe channel, and I was alongside more than an hour steaming hard, and that with the assistance of a kedge, before the Pet could he got off, and J, 0. B. Grant himself remarked to me that it was a precious good job for him that the Titania arrived just afc the time, or he would have made a regular mess of it. I address the latter part hereof to Mr J. C. B. Grant, just merely to remind him that that paragraph, wherever it emanated from, ii perfectly correct, and Master J. C. B. Grant maj now scribble away with impunity, as I shall after this treat all his penning with the silent contempt that it (as well as he) deserves. William Andesw Jabvbt.
