The man was known only as "Mick." He was at work upon the brace timbers erected over the shaft, and lost his balance and fell, bis body passing in a straight line down the shaft, a depth of about 240 feet. The body was raised to the surface, but life was extinct. Every bone was smashed. — Talbot Leader L.\ ror Pumpkin.— ln the valleys and secluded spots anions the valleys of Kangaroo, perssns unexpectedly came upon inhabitants and cultivated gardens, and it is remarkable that these grounds, considered as worthless for the purposes of the more extensive operations of agriculture, produces vegetables of immense size. In a garden attached to the residence of Mr .Jessa Holmes, a single pumpkin seen produced a vine coveiing a large extent of ground and bearing innumerable pumpkins, some of which were about five feet in circumference and 3 eighed eighty pounds. Brother Jonathan uses them extensively, why should not we? — Mount Alexander MailAs Animal Curiosity. — Our reporter was yesterday shown by Mr. Peter Coyle, veterinary 3urgeop in M.Crae-street, a bullock's bladder, which contained when removed from the animal an almost incredible quantity of fluid— eight gallons and a half. So incredulous was he of this anomaly in nature, that he demanded ocular demonstration before he could be convinced of the veracity of his informant's discovery, whicn was made at Sinclair's slaughter-yards, near the Sydenham Gardens. The animal was of average size, and appeared in perfect health, and no reason was assigned for so unusual a curiosity. — Bendigo Advertiser. Tobacco. — Mr. Lindsay Brown, of Gooramadda.has dried and sweated about' half a ton of Kentucky tobacco, this season. Samples of the leaf were sent last week to CHiitern for manufacture. THe. leaf 'was n very, finely grown; and' would apparently piay jvvellj both for plug tobacco and cigahs. To Naval Seamen and Soldiers. — Letters sent to o: by seamen and soldiers in Her Majesty's service will be transmitted within the Colony, and between the colony or any post-office in the British dominions, at a charge of ono penny, provided that the following regulations are observed : — 1 . Each letter must not exceed half an ounce in weight 2. Ifc must be superscribed wifch the name of the writer, his disposition or class in the vessel or regiment, and signed by the ofiicer at the time io command. 3. The postage must be pre-paid. E ery letter of this description, posfced or received in t his Colony, not in accordance with the foregoi & g reguation, will be treated as an ordinary lefcfce l ". 9. Free Letters. — Letters on the public servico of Her Majesty's Naval and Military Forces, are exempted from the pa3 T tnenfi of postage, if bearing the words, "On Her Majesty's Service," and the signature of the officer in command of the force on the service of which the letter is despatched. But such letters cannot be transmitted by any irregular route, or one entailing additional expense on the Colonial G-overnmeufc. Letters on the public service of the General Government of the colony are transmitted free by post, if bearing the words, "On the Public Service only," and the signature of some officer of the General Government authorised to frank official letters. 10. Registered Letters. — Registration Fee, Is, in addition to the ordinary postage chargeable on any other. Except in special cases, as exhibited in table subjoined. NEWSPAPERS. To auy part of the colony, if published in the colony, and posted within seven days from publication, free; if nofc published in the colony, or not posfced wifclro, seven days from publication, each, Id. 2. To the United Kingdom, via Southampton, or by direct ship, free; to the United Kiagdom. via Marseilles, each, 3d; 3. To fche Continent of Europe, via Trieste, each, 2d ; 4. To any part of the colony, or to the United Kingdom via Southampton: — Not exceeding 4 oz, 4d ; exceeding 4 oz, and not exceeding 8 oz, 8d ; exceeding 8 oz, and not exceeding 16 oz, ls4d; and so on, increasing eight pence for every additional half pound, or fraction of half-a-pound. 2. To the following British colonies — Ascension, Bermuda, British West Indies, Canada, Cape of Good Hope, Falkland Islands, Gambia, Gold Coast, Heligoland, lonian Islands, Nafel, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, St. Helena, Sierra Leone, Vancouver's Island : — Not exceeding 4 oz, 7d ; exceeding 4 oz, and not exceeding 8 oz, ls2d ; exceeding 8 oz, and not exceeding 16 oz, 2s 4d; and so on increasing one shilling and twopence for every half-pound, or fraction of half-a-pound. Prepayment by Stamps. — All letters, packets, and newspapers posted in New Zealand, must be prepaid by affixing postage labels of the colony of sufficient value. Loose Letters. — All letters received from beyond seas, at any Post-office in this colony, which have not been regularly posted afc fche pl°ce of despatch (loose letters), are chargeable wifcu full postage, according to the rates established by the foregoing tables, unless they are letters which ifc is nofc compulsory by law to send by post, in which case they avo chargeable with the inland rate of postage only Book-Packets to be Open for Inspection. — Evory book-packet shall be senfc open at t?-e ends or sides, and there shall be no enclosure sealed or otherwise closed against inspection senfc in or witb such packet, nor anything printed or written in the nature of a letter. Contents. — Witli the above limitations, a packet book may contain any number of separate books, maps, prints, or photographs, and any quantity of paper, vellum, or parchment, either printed, written on. ov plain, (exclusive of anything in the nature ofa letter whether sealed or open.) with the bind ing, covering, or mounting attached or belonging to sur-b bonk, print, map, or photograph, and all things legitimately appertaining to or necessary for the transmission of any enclosed literary or artistic matter, but exclusive of glass in any form. The names and address of the sender may appear on the cover. Registration. — Any person can have a letter registered by affixing on it by means of the proper labels tbo amount of the registration fee, in addition to the proper postage, and presenting ifc at a Post-office during office hours, and at least one hour before the closing of the mail by which it is desired to be transmitted. Every precaution will be adop.ed to onsure fche safe delivery of a registered letter, by entering it on the letter bills, and obtaining a receipt for the same on delivery. As the Post-office, however, is not responsible for the loss of any letter, whether registered or atherwise, persons sending bank-notes or drafts are advised to take the numbers and particulars, and to cut the notes or drafts in halves, and to send them by different post. Penalties. — Any person sending as exempt from postage letters not liable to exemption, or enclosing a communication in the nature of a letter in any newspaper or book-packet are liable to a penalty of £20. Overland Carriage. — No postmaster will be required to receive any book-packet for .transmission by an overland mail, if from its weight or anyother cause the packet appear calculated to retard the carrier. ...
