INVERCARGILL HORSE, CATTLE, AND SHEEP MARKET.
Thursday, May 21, 1863. Messrs. Robektson and Co. report — From day today the cry is t: still they come," but unfortunately, like the old fable of the shepherd and the wolf, we fear that this alarm may be raised so often that eventually, no notice will be taken of the reports that shipments of really valuable cattle and horses are daily expected. Still although the arrival of the promised mobs have been unfortunately delayed, we are only able to plead that stress of wind and weather have prevented buyers from having their choice from really superior lots, and in order that this uncertainty may not again occur, we beg to inform our friends that we have _ 'cceeded in making arrangement for a continuous supply from this date, ano therefore parties wishing to purchase, can place reliance upon being supplied with really first-class hort.es or cattle at stated period:. During the pre. ent week the only horses that we have had to offer, have been a few good, heavy draught, and about twenty superior hacks, besides some dozen inferior of both sorts. The former lots were disposed of privately as offered, and those of the latter submitted to the hammer, found very ready purchasers. A mob of really good draught horses in the hands of a another firm, have been offered, and, we belive, sold at fair rates, as md ed it would have beon impossible to do otherwie than obtain good prices in the present state of the market, but the lot to which we have alluded before, and which after being hawked all over the country, were ag- "n offered, we believe, were bought in or if not, they must have been disposed of it very much reduced rates. We quote sales at the following rates: — Superior draught horses, LBS toLlOO; good do do, L 65 to LBO ; inferior do do, L4O to L 55. Light harness horses, L4O ,to L 55; good hacks (very scarce), L4O to LSO ; inferior do, (still very little inquiries) L2O to L 26. Cattle. — The supply still continues very short of the demand and is likely to be so until the opening of the ports. There is scarcely any quoted at the market price. Sheep. — But very few offering, and the demand good. Stations. — During the last two months we may state that there has scarcely been any good stations in the market at any price, but we believe we shall be prepared duriag the ensuing month to submit m >re than o.ie good property. There can be very little doubt but that fair prices will be rer'ised, as we have many orders on hand besides priv te purchasers, that we are acquainted with, who for some length of time have been looking out for good investments. We hope that the spring will open with a really good business in this iue. Messes. Caeet and Gilles report: — That during the week they have sold by public auction, second class h^avy draught horses at from LTO to L9O ; third class draught, L4O to Lrto; hacks. L2O to L 45. On Saturday next we anticipate a good attendance with spirited biddings for the heavy draught horses to be submitted on that day, and expect to obtain prices equal to the rates paid a 1 : our sale last week of horses ex Star of Victoria.
