Dangkr of Gas. — A serious accident from the explosion of eaa occurred at the Waverley Hotel, Little Collins-street, a few ni?lits a^o, by which Mr. Byrne, the landlord, and Mrs. Byrne, were seriously hurt. It appears that ihe chandelier in the billiard room had£otdetached from theceilin^ in the course of the evening, when Mr Eyrne was absent, and his wife beingf bii3 in the bar. had neglected to stop the pip to prevpnt the escape of e;as. ft was lat when Mr. Byrne returned, and or. enterin the house, deteciinar 'he escape of gas, he incautiously entered the billiard room wit a lighted candle, when a terrific explosio took place, severely injuring Mr. Byrne who wa3 thrown down in a state of insen sibility. Thoush severely injured, he is now in a fair way of recovery. Mrs. Byrne is also convalescent. The shock was so frreat that (he doors and windows, as well as the bottles and glasses in the bar, wer shattered to atoms. —Age.
On Monday morning, ; a? a^entleman was crossing Hyde P-jt!ric r ,''*he 'observed a naked female child lying under one of the seats. It was conveyed t^ the workhouse, -when it was found to have been killed by strangulation.
