DUNEDIN LIVE STOCK MARKET.
Drives, Maclean & Co.'s Report for^^^H ending 2nd May, 1803 :— • .^^H We have to report an active demand for -^^^1 of almost every class, particularly for stores sheep and cattlo), of which' tho market isv#y^^H Holders are not inclined to sell, owing to the^^H tbat we are likely to be short supplied with^H stock during the ensuing year. By reference to the dispatch lately forwarded^M the Superintendent to the General GovernmentJM will be seen that he has advised the removal of tIH restrictions which exist against the importation or^ cattle from Tasmania, Wide Bay, Morcton Bay, and Twofold Bay. Should this be dono, it can have but tittle effect on this market for some time to come; and we doubt whether it will ever materially affect prices here, as with cost, freight, ancl other expenses, cattle cannot be lauded here much under their present value. In any event, we anticipate a continuance of our present prices for a long timo to come ; but, should tho above mentioned ports not be opened, we may look for much higher rates — as ifc is an acknowledged fact, tbat we have double the population, with over fivo thousand head of cattlo, and many thousand sheep loss than at this time last year. The same remarks will apply to store shoep, which are at presont allowed to land from any port, if free from disease. Fat Cattle. — During the week 150 bave been yarded, and were all disposed of at about last quotations, 100 of which were Provincial brod. Our butchers are but moderately sup-died, and any lots coming forward (of good quality) will moot ready sale. We qiioto present rates, say for best quality 65s per 100 lbs; seconds at 50a to 555. Fat Calves — But few offering, which find ready sale at Lo to L 7, aeOordin.-- to age and quality. Store Cattle. — We have had numerous inquiries for stores (over two years old), and buyers are unable to supply themselves. We quote mixed herds, Provincial bred, at from LlO 10s to Ll2 10s; bullocks over two years old, at from L l2 to Ll4. WORKINRBULLOOKS AND DAIRY COWS. — The former continue in great request, and are saleable at L6o to L7O ior first-class acclimatised bullocks, and LSO to L55 for imported. Dairy cows are very scarce, and saleable at LIS to L 22. Fat Sheet 1 . — The market continues poorly supplied with good mutton. Any lots offering arc eagerly sought after at advanced rates, and we cannot expect to see the supply equal to tho demand during the winter months. Stoke Shekp. — We hear of but few transactions in this description of stock, as only a very number are offering ; buyers, however, are numerous, and prepared to pay high prices. We quote young ewes at 30s to 32s ; L-rge framed healthy wethers at 24s to 265; lambs, mixed sexes, at 20s. Stations. — We have daily applications for runs, with few desirable properties in the market. We have do transactions to report during tlie week. Horses. — Our yards have been well supplied with a very superior class of horses, sevci-al consignments have come to hand during the week. The market has been bare of really first-class stock fifr some time past, for which there is now a great demand, but importers, impressed with the idea that tho ahove class must yet command a higher figure, show no disposition to sell, notwithstanding the eagerness displayed by purchasers, consequently we have to report a diminution in sales. Prices still continue to have an upward tendency, and should owners givo way a little, we anticipate doing a good businoss during the ensuing week. Prices current: — Sunerior draught horses, L9o to L 120; medium do, Lt'is to LBS ; inferior do, L25 to L.'35 ; fii\*fc class saddlo aud harness horsos, Loo to L75 ; medium do, L35 to LfO; inferior do, L2O to L3O ; good weight carrying cobs very scarce and in great demand.
