TOWN BOARD ELECTION.
The nomination of candidates to serve on the Town Board, in room of Messrs. Garthwaite, Monkman, Lockhart, and Grant, resigned, took place in tbe School-house on Saturday. At the hour appointed, about a dozen electors met. Mr Robert Mitchell, Returning Officer, having opened the proceedings, Mr Monkman proposed Mr William Garthw "te : seconded by Mr Hargin. Mr G. M. K. Clarke proposed Mr daggers : secon dby Mr R. Miller. Mr R. Murdoch proposed Mr George Lumsden, seconded by Mr Monkman. Mr James Hargin proposed Mr H. B Monkman, but that gentleman declined to take office. Mr A. T. Clark proposed Mr G. M. K. Clarke ; seconded hy Mr Hargin. Mr R. Miller proposed Mr David Smith. On examination it was found that Mr Smith could not be elected, his name not being on the roll. Mr Monkman proposed Mr "William Rohertson, baker, Tay-street ; seconded by Mr H. Murdoch. Mr Hargin proposed Mr William Lockhart ; seconded by Mr Monkman. Mr A. T. Clark proposed Mr J. P. Meadows ; seconded by Mr Miller. Mr R. Miller proposed Mr J. (Kay ; seeconded by Mr Murdoch. Mr Monkman proposed Mr Walter H. Pearson, as they were likely to have something to do with the gravel again ; amid great laughter, Mr Miller seeonded the nomination. The Returning Officer protested against, such proceedings. Mr Pearson, as a Government official, could not occupy a sest at the Town Board. The meeting being determined that Mr Pearson's name should be put down, the ! Returning Officer recorded it. Mr R. Miller proposed Mr Nathaniel Chalmers as a fit and proper person. He had i at one time been very anxious to be a mem- \ ber of the Board, and they would now give him the chance. Mr Hargin seconded the nomination. Mr Bain proposed Mr J. Coutts, tailor; seconded by Mr Goodwillie. ; : Mr G. M. K. Clarke proposed Mr Isaac Broad ; seconded by Mr R. Miller. ! Mr Hargin proposed Mr William Livesey ; seconded by Mr Birss. The Returning Officer here discovered that Mr Lumsden was not eligible, his name -not being on the electoral rolL It was accordingly struck out from Jjhe list of candidates. Mr Monkman proposed Mr Thomas M. j Clark ; seconded by Mr Hargin. j Mr Hargin proposed Mr C. M. Baggot •; seconded by Air Birss. Mr A. T. Clarke proposed Mr W. H. Calder ; secondedA»y-Mr Murdoch. Mr Monkman, . proposed Captain A. J. Elles ; seconded by Mir- Hargin. Mr Hargin proposed" Mr Lynd -, seconded by Mr A. T. Clark. Mr Monkman proposed Mr Middleton, but his name not being on the roll, he was declared ineligible. I Mr Goodwillie proposed Mr Rankin ; seccnded by Mr Hargin. Mr Hargin proposed Mr Blacklock ; sej conded by Mr Monkman. The Returning Officer, who had from time to time intimated the number of names, now j declined to receive any more, as some gentlemen were proposing more candidates than I there were vacancies. He then proceeded to take a show of hands, with the following result : — Garth waite ... 5 Coutts 6 Jaggers 9 Broad 4 G."M. K. Clarke 8 Livesey 1 J Robertson ... 7 T.M.Clark 5' Lockhart ... 4 Baggott 2 Meadows ... 7 Calder 7 Hay 8 Ellis 5 Pearson 12 Lynd 3 Chalmers ... 8 Blacklock ... 5 The Returning Officer intimated that the highest number was for Mr Pearson, Mr Jaggers came next, and that Messrs G. M. K. Clarke, Hay, and Chalmers were equal. Mr Monkman, on behalf of Mr Garthwaite, and Mr Hargin, on behalf of Mr G. M. K. Clarke, then demanded a poll, which was j fixed to take place in the Board-room, on Monday. THE POLLING Took place yesterday in the Board Room. The following was the result : — Garthwaite ... 16 Coutts,... ... 4 Jaggers 13 Livesey, 6 Chrke.G.M.K. .. 18 Clarke, T. M. ... 0 Robertson, W. ... 0 Baggott 0 ; Meadows, ... 0 Calder, 2 Hay, 10 Blacklock, ... 1 Pearson 2 Lind, ... ... 0 Chalmers, ... 1 Mr Lockhart withdrew his name previous to the voting, and Mr Broad and Captain Elles being declared ineligible, no votes were accorded for him. At four o'clock the Returning Officer announced that Messrs. G. M. K. Clarke, Garthwaite, Jaggers, and Hay, were duly elected members of the Town Board.
