MANUHERIKA.

During the last few days the river has been rising and falling ; we are now in hope of its keeping down, especially as snow covers the ranges, and cold weather is setting in. Business has not been very brisk this last week; of course we cannot expect that if men are not getting gold, storekeepers can do the same amount of business. Last Wednesday we had a very narrow escape from having the township

burnt down. The bakery of Brown and Gunn, situated at the back part of the premises, caught fire from tlie heat of the chimney, but through the prompt attention of the diggers and storekeepers, close by, it was soon put out without rriuch damage. J. Hart's post office and store, being nefct door, would have stood poor chance had the fire broke out at night ; as it was, however, very little damage was done.

There id a rush up the Manuherikia, but we have no positive information as to how it is turning out; in the course of a day or two we shall know more about it. The ,Nil Desperandura Company are goins ahead fast ; they have finished the flood race, and are now commencing the draining 1 . fn a fortnight they expect to be ia working order : their prospects have lately been first rate.
