CUSTOMS REVENUE OF THE COLONY FOE 1862.
The usual quarterly returns of customs revenue and of imports and exports have been published by the Commissioner. The customs revenue of the colony for the. year ended 31st Debcmber ult., amounted to £3')9,-7~. The revenue of the year- lfjfil iva? £200,863 ; the increase in one year was £133, -109- Otago contributes by far the largest portion of the increase. New Plymouth exhibits a decrease of £1096; the province;; of Nelson, Marlborough, ami Il.uvke's Bay, where the policy of selling land cheap and "keeping out immigrants prevails, exhibit very li.tie change in the comparative returns of lSlil and 3 302, whilst all the other provinces appear to make rapid progress. The customs revenue of the colony for the last December quarter was £118,526, showing an increase of £32,000 on the return for corresponding quarter in the year 1861. Of^his total Otago contributes £51,905; Auckland, £'23,776; Canterbury, £U,148 ; Wellington, 4112,080; Nelson, £.581;; Southland, £1210; MarJborough, £930; Iluwkc's Bay, 4J2021 ; Taranaki. £1990. The imports of the colony during the last year are valued at £4,626.091 ! the imports of loGl having been of the value of £2,-i'J3,Sll ; the exports of the colony in 1802 are valued at £2,421.811, as against £1,370,217 in the preceding year. The value of the gold exported during the last December quarter is 4J3D"),527 ; the quantity is 102,3:30 ozs., whereof Otago furnished 99,370 ozs.; Nelson, U32 oy.s.; Auckland, 978 ozs. Auckland makes as yet but a poor figure in the fold returns, but she has " prospects " of high encouragoment, and stout hearts and strong arms are engaged in the work of developing the riches of the quartz reefs of Coromandol.
