CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

On Saturday afternoon about 30 of our leading merchants and traders met at the store of Messrs. Dalgety, Rattray and. Co., for the purpose of considering the desirability of establishing a Chamber of Commerce in Invercargill. In the absence of Mr Calder, Mr Blacklock was unanimously called to the chair, and Mr J. B. Sands, was appointed secretary pro tern. The Chairman briefly mentioned the object of the meeting, and it was agreed, that the subject of rules should be left to a committee.

Mr Whitton then moved " that it is desirable that a Chamber of Commerce be established in Invercargill."

Mr Caroy seconded the motion, which was carried nem con.

The names of those -willing to become members were then taken by the Secretary as follows .-—Messrs Calder, Blacklock, Campbell, Horner, Maning, Whitton, Beaven, M'Donald, Fitzgerald, Smallfield, Bonar, Gillies, Law, John Ross, Hallenstein, Smith, Leary, Carey, Button, Hatch, Hamilton, Gillies, Sands, Wade, Adam, Macgeorge, M'lvor and Miller.

On the motion of Mr Gillies, seconded by Mr Wade, a committee of eleven was appointed to draw up the Constitution of the Chamber, frame rules, and report at a general meeting to be held tathe same place on Saturday first.

A vote of thanks being given to the chairman, the meeting adjourned, and tho Committee commenced their operations.
