TOWN BOARD.

A special meeting of the Town Board was held last nie;ht. Present — Messrs. Garthwaite, lockhart, Beaven, and Monkman; Mr. Monkman in the chair. The Chairman read the following correspondence : — 13th April, 1863. Sir, — I am sorry to inform you that I am obliged to stop operations in Tay-street, in consequence of the Crown Commissioner refusing my men to remove gravel from the Esplanade Reserve, where I was to get the gravel from for the completion of said street. Therefore I hold the Town JBoard responsible for such detention. I am, &c, (Signed) John Campbell, Of Campbell and Robertson. To E. M. Marchant, Esq., C.E. 13th April, 1863. To the Chairman of the Town Board. Sik, — I bpg to enclose you the copy of a letter received from the contractors for Tay -street, Messrs Campbell and Kobertson, from which you wili see the urgency of settling the gravel question. On receiving the resolution iorwarded by your Board on Thursday last, the Commissioner of Crown Lands iniormed me he should not interfere with the supply of gravel, but that the question should be tried nevertheless. I enclose the copy of a letter I have written to the Commissioner of Crown Lands on the subject, and I have the honor to be, &c, (Signed) E. M. Mahchakt. i 13th April, 1863. To the Hon. the Commissioner of Crown Lands. Sie, — I have the honor of enclosing you the copy of a letter from the contractor of Tayatreet. With every inhabitant of Invercargill, I can only regret that you should withdraw the assent given by you after receiving the resolution passed by the Town Board on Thursday, and state that the consequenceß-of the stoppage of the works in Tay-street will be far more injurious to the inhabitants and to the progress of the town than may be imagined. I remain, &c, (Signed) It. M. MJUtCHANTAi'ter a long conversation on the subject, the following motion was agreed to : — " The Commissioner of Waste Lands having withdrawn his consent not to interfere with the removal of gravel from the Esplanade, that a deputation, consisting of the Chairman, Mr. Garthwaite, and the mover (Mr. Beaven) wait upon him to ascertain his reasons for again obstructing the removal of gravel from the Esplanade, and that the contractors be instructed to take the gravel in the meantime from Levenstroet." Some other business was transacted, and the Board adjourned.
