The Intercolonial Royal Mail Steampacket Company are rapidly adding to their fine fleet of iron steamships that have been built for them in this country. On Saturday the Paulet, destined to convey the mails between Australia and New Zealand, was launched from the building yard of Messrs Charles Mitchell and Co, on the T>ne. She is an extremely handsome vessel. No ex • pense has been spared in fitting her up for the extensive passenger trade between the two colonies, and among the modern improvements introduced in:o the cabin arrangements of this vessel is one that will be ve.y acceptable aboard steamships in warm climates. A separate steam engine is to be erected on board this vessel, for the purpose of thoroughly ventilating the holds, cabin, and engine-rooms, and so completely will the system be carried out that each private cabin will be provided with a ventilating tube, so that each passenger will have the opportunity of rG<_'u'nting the draught to suit his individual convenience. Tiie machinery !o drive the Paulet is of 150 horse-power, and has been manufactured by Messjs R. Morrison and Co., of Newcastle. By the use of surface condensers there will be a considerable economy in the consumption of fuel.
