VICTORIA JOCKEY CLUB AUTUMN MEETING.
The Victoria Jockey Club acted very wisely when they nnnounced a ample day's racing ia place of their usual three days' meeting. The reduction was all tbo more commendable because it evinced a considerable amount of moral courago in giving way to the times, and confessing the inability of the club to engage in a three days' campaign in the present depressed times. Tlie St. Leger brought out four runners only, tbe fifth on the card, Modesty, having been scratched in the morning, whilst of the others it was pretty well known that Baroness had lately "had a bad ni-'ht," and Coromandel's form had been exposed bofh in the Oaks and Great Western Prodtica Stakes. The Handicap proved a complete surprise, and had there been enough of betting it would have been a <jood tfr'ng for tho ring. Seven horses started for it and all except the winner and Lady Qodiva had sanguine owners and a few backers. The Steeplechase was a second tkrow in for the fielders, though had not Young Camel broken down it is hard to say which way the money would have gone. The Selling race fell to ••^oreerer who pro:.i'° ed so well as a two year old, tho old Meur cutting up a rogue as usual. No sooner did they got round tho first turn than Barwon improved the p ice. so much so, that opposite the old stand Ooromandol and Barones, were out of it. The race being reduced to a match it is ersily described.
