DISSOLUTION OF THE PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.

Lnst night a great public meeting' of the inhabitants was held in the Mechanics' Institute, Cor the purpose of considering the propriety of petitioning the present Council to (iissolve itself. Shortly ai'tev tin hour announced the half was crowded to excess, and a large number had to turn away without gaining .admission. On t lie motion of Mr Blaclrlock, Mr Smallfield w.as unanimously called to the Chair. Mr B'ackiock moved the first resoluiion. " That in the opinion of this meeting, the present Provincial Council of Southland, uunht withont delay to be dissolved.' 1 Mr Perkins secoT.'dcd the resolution, which was enilui^iaeticf>lly ojjreod to. afu-r j it had been' spoken to by Mr t). M'Kay and Mr L'aldd 1 . | Mr r>ea\ en moved the second /esolmion, *' That lliis meetinjr approves o/" the iollowing peiition, and earnestly iccominonds it to the electors and inhabitants of the Province tor signature, ami requests Messrs Culder and Stuart io present it to the Covmcil at its ensuing sittings." The petition craved for dissolution on the foiiowinj; grounds : — The great in-cri-asH: of tlmse entitled to vote ; exceptionable character of the first elections ; •nd change in ihe position and prospects of the Province. Mr Smith seconded <he motion and petition, which were also unauimously ngieed to. A vole of thankd (o the chairman teiminated the proceedings.
