Billiard Match at Newmarket. — A billiard match took place at the White Hart on the evening of Oct. 29 between Roberts (the Champion) and Dufton, the latter receiving 400 points out of 1000. It was for <£25 a side, and the room was crowded long before play was commenced, Lord Stamford and several noblemen and gentlemen being among the company present, Before commencing sto 4 was laid on Dufton, and as the game proceeded the odds increased, till at last, when Dufton's score was 083, and Roberta's 910,20 to 1 was offerod upon the first named. Nothing daunted, however, Roberts took the cue in hand, and scored over 70 before he gave up to Dufton, who had only 17 to get to win. After getting eight, however, he missed, and his opponent went in again and won cleverly, amid tremendons cheering. Many of the leading turf professionals speculated heavily upon the match, and a deal of money changed hands. Another contest is in c ontemplation. Home Nwi.
